Will the ‘Search-based’ Era End? Thai Gen Z Stops Searching, Waits to ‘Discover’ Products Through Social Feeds
A recent study reveals that 66.9% of Gen Z in Thailand prefer watching video reviews on TikTok and social media before making a purchase decision, while only 21.9% still use Google Search. This behavior signals a fundamental shift from ‘search-based’ (intentional seeking) to ‘discovery-based’ (accidental discovery through content). Furthermore, 73.9% of Gen Z receive news and content primarily from their social media feeds, leaving intentional searching at just 42.5%. An expert from IBM Connect, Mr. Seree Sirinopwongsakorn, Executive Director, analyzed that this data reflects Gen Z’s need for “Real Experience,” where short-form video content and storytelling on TikTok can create more impactful and visually authentic results than text on web pages.
This is not a fleeting trend but a transformation into a Social-first, AI-assisted, and Experience-driven era. Brands must scientifically understand this, as AI is stepping up from a convenience tool to a “decision-making assistant.” The “For You” page on TikTok uses algorithms based on viewing time, likes, and comments to deliver content before the user even searches—encapsulating the “wait-and-be-served” phenomenon. Gen Z does not completely abandon Google for sensitive or deep searches, but they favor TikTok for quick, concise, and personal topics like recipes, fashion tips, and travel advice, dissatisfied with Google’s cluttered, ad-heavy results.
