  • Brand Reputation Damage:

Full English Translation:

“Online content designed to provoke anger or dissatisfaction from viewers through provocative, irritating, or controversial material, with the goal of driving traffic and increasing engagement.” Or simply: “Online content purposely created to bait viewers into commenting with criticism and sharing to continue the argument, all to boost engagement.

In the past, people online tried to attract attention by stimulating curiosity for clicks, known as clickbait. But over the past year, we’ve seen content that is annoying, makes us feel frustrated, wanting to say something, or even wanting to criticize the illogicality of what we’re watching.

For example, content that deliberately gives wrong information about famous places, calling well-known neighborhoods or shops ‘hidden gems,’ or posting discriminatory/generalized views to provoke corrections or criticism. A common example is creators using angry or controversial language to trigger comments, such as baiting people to correct a ‘mistake.’ When people comment and share to argue, the clip becomes trending and gains massive engagement.

From a business perspective, it’s hard to say if a brand is intentionally using Rage Bait marketing, as we can’t truly know the brand’s intent. Having people criticize and rant for engagement and media coverage might be intentional or just a genuine brand mistake.

A clear example is American Eagle using Sydney Sweeney as a presenter with the tagline “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” The word ‘Jeans’ sounds like ‘Genes,’ leading many to interpret the brand as implying “Sydney Sweeney has good genes” and questioning if the brand supports inequality. This received global backlash, even in Thailand, damaging the brand’s image.

Another risk is backlash. If content appears overly provocative or crosses a line, the brand may be criticized for being unprofessional or socially irresponsible. And when consumers feel their emotions are being manipulated or used to generate engagement, trust in the brand decreases, which takes a long time to rebuild.

Ultimately, Rage Bait Marketing is just one marketing tool, not a one-size-fits-all formula. While it can create rapid awareness, if it comes at the cost of brand image, credibility, and long-term customer relationships, the cost may outweigh the benefits.
